White House

Davao, known for its famous "durian" and other sweet delicacies is also known for their cuisine. One famous attraction in the heart of the city is the White House. Located at J. P. Laurel avenue, the European inspired ancestral house of a renowned family has been converted into one of the best fine dining restaurant in Mindanao. Boasting of old world charm appeal, the beautiful interiors gives one a glimpse of life at a certain period in history.  Wood furnishings and crystal decors reflect a fusion of mixed heritage.  Heigh ceiling, huge window panels an wooden flooring are still intact as it is maintained an managed well.  The ambiance brings you back in time as the mood and feel is reminiscent of a glorious era full of parties, gatherings and socials. Run by chefs Cathy Binag and NiƱo Laus, their  impeccable fusion cuisine offers a wide variety of French, Italian and Japanese dishes to feast on.  The White House has a wine lounge with a great selection of both old and new world delights. The perfect place to relax and enjoy the evening with good food and buzz with friends. The outdoor setting is a spacious botanical area filled colossal trees with contemporary furnitures. The modern garden feel is perfect for events and big gatherings where one can enjoy the fresh air over bubbles and wine.  A must-see for everyone who wants something old but new. Definitely a place one would look forward to come back to in Davao!

Malacca

Malacca is a fascinating travel destination rich in history. One of Malaysia's cultural treasures showcase priceless landmarks and ruins which makes it a UNESCO World Heritage site . The historical city is painted not only with hues seen on the buildings, streets, establishments and decorative vehicles but more so with tradition and culture that keeps the spirit of "Melaka" alive.  Walking down the interesting streets gives you a feeling of being transported in history.  Influenced by the Dutch and Portuguese, the beauty of its remains reflects the beauty of the city's multicultural attraction.  Endless old houses with painted window panels and facade is more than a sight to behold. The once Straits of Malacca was known to be the passage way of global voyagers and the international port became one of the prime centers of trade in Southeast Asia.  The local cuisine is a gastronomic haven of a variety of dishes from the common street food to speciality restaurants.  Laksa satay and spices overflow the menu with endless delicacies but nevertheless like a feast for the gods.
Traveling to Malacca is truly a memorable experience. A must-go for culture vultures where history unfolds its endless landscapes.  Foodies wouldn't want to miss this as well as it is definitely a haven for the gastronomic adventurer.

Revisiting Truly Asia

Revisiting Malaysia last month completely changed my perspective on Truly Asia.  Having been to this country a couple of times before really didn't tickle this author's interest since there wasn't really much too see --wrong.  The Muslim nation is rich in heritage and was mesmerized with its national treasures. Colossal monuments of both old and new have captivated my heart with amazement as they unfold in front of my eyes. Enchanting structures rich in history  build the nation's pride as one of the top tourist destinations in Southeast Asia. From traditional to modern bridges, beautiful and gigantic mosques, amazing palaces, historical hotels, and significant monuments flash in front of our eyes was like traveling in a time machine from the past and back to the future.Touring around these spectacular landmarks, the government was quite kind enough to accommodate and provide us with undivided special treatment. The outstanding panoramic views are seamlessly breathtaking with mesmerizing architectural wonders that truly showcases an outstanding point of view. Looking into the lens unveils a picture perfect moment that's so unforgettable it will definitely last a lifetime.
The grandeur and monumental visual feast of Malaysia's landscape is a must-go for everyone but make sure to bring lots of sun-block-the equatorial weather can be quite taxing.  Nevertheless, its the perfect vacay destination for those who are into history, culture, tradition and the rest of it all. So much to see and so little time, it makes one look forward to coming back to a country filled with beauty of both old and new.

Past Present

The Philippines is a country rich in history.  Colonization through the decades has built the unique appeal of our multi-cultural identity and the richness of what the Filipino is today.  One of the greatest contribution of this mark of distinction is evidently seen is both in design and architecture.  Old world charm still exists in modern times as new movements significantly rebuild the past.
Starbucks Philippines recently opened a Heritage Concept Store at J.P. Laurel Bldg. last August 18, 2011 located at Roxas Boulevard, Manila.  Loving how great wonders can be done is preserving and restoring something of great value. The building echoes the distinct look of 70’s architecture and inside the establishment's interiors are tribute photo momorabilia to the great works of Jose P. Laurel, President of the Republic of the Philippines from 1943 to 1945. Starbucks' idea of restoration is commendable and should serve as an inspiration for others.  The establishment maximized the use of space by exposing the high ceiling, restoring the original wood moulding wrapping the soffit and keeping the wood sun breakers behind the store’s perimeter glass wall. Complementing the look and feel of this heritage concept store, elements such as high wainscot wrapped around columns, high backed banquette and large framed photographs of Manila during the '70s were added. The new haven gives one an impression of the past as it attempts to take you back in time. Customers get to experience coffee with history at this store as early as 6:30am during weekdays and 7:30am during weekends. The store closes at 1:30 am on Fridays and Saturdays and 12 am during the rest of the week.

Starbucks in the Philippines is operated by Rustan Coffee Corporation (RCOC), the sole authorized licensee of Starbucks Coffee International. Starbucks Philippines opened its first retail store on December 4, 1997 at 6750 Ayala Avenue, MakatiCity. To date, there are 182 Starbucks stores located across the country.
